Black & white negatives are well known for scratching. Unlike color negatives, they contain grains of silver halide. Brittle, these grains easily scratch the surface of the negative and even when handled gently you will find tiny scratches that are not visible to the naked eye. Unfortunately, when the negative is scanned and the image is enlarged, these tiny scratches can be so numerous and large, relative to the image.

 

To remove small scratching we can use Kodak Digital Ice and we scan the negative like color. The other way are to correct the negative 100% by hand and here we are maybe talk about Restoration if the normaly scanning gives unsatisfactory images.
